What Is It?
A non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for people with special needs and disabilities through therapeutic horsemanship activities and therapies, and educational outreach.
Help Needed:
Volunteers may be side-walkers or horse leaders, or assist with special events, administrative work, barn cleaning, or other tasks. Please contact SIRE for COVID-related updates.

Minimum Age to Volunteer

Time Commitment
Minimum of 1 hour a week; no maximum. We run by the semester (summer semester starts mid-June) and we do ask for a regular weekly commitment at whichever time slot is decided upon between SIRE and the volunteer.
Suitable for Groups of Volunteers?
Yes (group maintenance and spruce-up projects). Comcast and other organizations have done group projects at SIRE.
Training Needed
Volunteers must attend orientation. No prior experience with horses is required.

HELP IN THE RIDING ARENA
Volunteers may be side-walkers (providing physical and verbal support) or horse leaders (assuring safe horse handling during class).

HELP OUTSIDE THE RIDING ARENA
Volunteers may assist with administrative tasks, special events, barn cleaning, small repair jobs, or other projects.

Examples of past Scout projects
Silver Award: Jillian(Troop 17417) built and installed a ground pole organizer and storage units for the Fort Bend location, created online tutorials for baking horse treats, and led informational sessions educating others about SIRE. (2020)
Eagle: Josh K. built a new client waiting area with concrete slab and roof, which is especially useful for sheltering riders who use wheelchairs. (2014)
Eagle: Patrick K. (Troop 533) built a storage and equipment room for SIRE. (2010)
