What Is It?
A nonprofit organization focused on “community service, social development, and unity within our community.” It promotes the practice and obligation of Zakat (charity), one of the five Pillars of Islam, and welcomes volunteers of all faiths.
Help with serving meals at Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, distributing food to the homeless at various locations, and other projects. Please contact Promulgate for COVID-related updates.
Minimum Age to Volunteer
Varies. Example: lunch at Loaves & Fishes usually takes about 3 hours. The meal is usually served from 11 AM-Noon. Volunteer cooks arrive at 9 AM to start work; security needs to be there by 9:45 AM. Servers and bus boys/table bussers need to arrive by 10 AM.
None. Volunteers are encouraged to wear Promulgate t-shirts, but this is not required. (Available from http://houstonpromulgate.org/, or contact Promulgate for more information. Shirts cost from $20-$25 depending on size.) Please wear closed toe shoes.
SERVE LUNCH AT LOAVES & FISHES
Several times a year Promulgate serves lunch to more than 150 homeless guests at the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen in downtown Houston. Volunteer roles include Kitchen Cook, Server, Security, and Table Clearer. Promulgate provides a satisfying meal and presents information about a self-help topic to help encourage the homeless guests.
OTHER SERVICE PROJECTS
Other volunteer projects have included Hurricane Harvey clean-up, Ramadan food distribution with the Houston Food Bank Mobile Pantry in Stafford, and food distribution at various Houston locations. Check Promulgate’s Facebook page for updates.
