PAIR (PARTNERSHIP FOR THE ADVANCEMENT & IMMERSION OF REFUGEES)
What Is It?: A non-profit that improves the lives of young refugees as they face the great challenges of learning a new language and adapting to a new way of life. “Our programs assist youth in adjusting to American life, achieving academic success, and becoming self-sufficient and engaged members of our community.”
Help Needed: Serve as an after-school mentor and tutor, or help lead the middle school summer program, including field trips and other activities.
Minimum Age to Volunteer: 16. Parental permission is required if volunteer is under 18.
CORE PROGRAM VOLUNTEER
Core Program Volunteers participate in group mentoring and other activities during a set after-school program schedule from September through April. This volunteer option requires a weekly commitment for a minimum of one academic semester (fall and/or spring, though volunteers are highly encouraged to continue for a full academic year to build a better relationship with their students and increase their own skills and effectiveness). Meetings take place after school, generally between 4 PM and 6 PM.
SUMMER PROGRAM FOR GLOBAL LEARNERS JUNIOR COUNSELOR
In this program, also known as “Summer PAIR,” middle-school-aged refugee students explore Houston, take part in STEM projects, play games, meet new people, practice English, and develop academic and social skills. Counselors help out and serve as role models, promoting good behavior, learning, and fun. Commitment is for 3 weeks in July, Monday-Friday, 10 AM-2 PM, at Jane Long Academy Middle School.
