What Is It?
Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization and shelter, offering a comprehensive array of animal adoption, shelter, rescue, rehabilitation, and other programs.
Help Needed:
Volunteers may work directly with animals or in other areas; they must commit to serve for 8 hours a month for 6 months. The shelter also has a wish list of needed items.

Training Needed
The Houston SPCA will provide the required training. Cost of orientation is $25 for ages 16-17 (covers cost of screening and T-shirt)

SHELTER VOLUNTEER
All new volunteers are considered trainees and complete their first 20 hours in one of the four direct animal care areas: large dogs, small dogs, cattery, or small mammals. After serving for 20 hours, volunteers are eligible to apply for additional volunteer opportunities. Further details outlining these opportunities are provided at orientation.

COLLECT NEEDED ITEMS
The Houston SPCA welcomes donations of supplies, including cat litter (non-clumping), dog and cat toys, can openers, Yesterday’s News rabbit litter, newspapers, towels and blankets, paper towels, bleach, and copy paper. A current list of needed items is here. (Click on “wish list.”)

Girl Scout Troop 123062 donated 16 cases of Girl Scout cookies to the HSPCA as part of the Cookies for Heroes program. (2019)
Eagle: Constructed and installed three seven-foot-tall horse feeders.
Eagle: Richard built four 4′ tall chicken perches. (2018)
Eagle: Braxton C. (Troop 55) built and installed four wooden chicken perches. (2015)
Eagle: Trenton H. (Troop 55) worked with the HSPCA to design and build out shelves in a storage area for equipment used by pet adoption volunteers, and donated an additional $500 to assist with the adoption program. (2003)
