COLLEGE MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY ASSOCIATION

About

What Is It?

An historic five-acre cemetery that was founded in 1896 and served as the burial site for Houston’s freed slaves who lived in the historic Fourth Ward. The cemetery was neglected for many years.

Help Needed:

Restoration began in 2007 and is ongoing. Volunteers are needed to help with work such as mowing, trimming weeds, and cleaning up litter.  Please contact the Association for COVID-related updates.

Examples of past Scout projects

Eagle: Christian G. refurbished five wrought-iron benches near the entrance by stripping, sanding, and repainting them and replacing the wood slats.

Eagle: Connor R. raised more than $10,000 to restore 10 marked gravestones,  even out the ground throughout the cemetery, place a monument for the people in unmarked graves, build frames for the cemetery plots, provide in-ground headstones to replace missing ones, and plant two live oak trees.
