What Is It?
An historic five-acre cemetery that was founded in 1896 and served as the burial site for Houston’s freed slaves who lived in the historic Fourth Ward. The cemetery was neglected for many years.
Help Needed:
Restoration began in 2007 and is ongoing. Volunteers are needed to help with work such as mowing, trimming weeds, and cleaning up litter. Please contact the Association for COVID-related updates.

Minimum Age to Volunteer
All ages may help, but children must be accompanied – and well supervised by – an adult. All volunteers must submit a volunteer waiver.
Time Commitment
Clean-ups usually last four hours (8 AM to noon), but any amount of volunteer time you can spare is welcome.
Suitable for Groups of Volunteers?
Yes. For example, Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops and other groups have helped at the cemetery.
Training Needed
None. Association volunteers will provide instructions.

MONTHLY WORK DAYS
Work Days take place on the second Saturday of every month, from 8 AM to noon. Since 2007, thousands of volunteers have mowed, trimmed weeds, cut down trees and cleaned up trash. All skill levels of work are available.

Examples of past Scout projects
Eagle: Christian G. refurbished five wrought-iron benches near the entrance by stripping, sanding, and repainting them and replacing the wood slats.
Eagle: Connor R. raised more than $10,000 to restore 10 marked gravestones, even out the ground throughout the cemetery, place a monument for the people in unmarked graves, build frames for the cemetery plots, provide in-ground headstones to replace missing ones, and plant two live oak trees.
