What Is It?
A nonprofit that works with teams of volunteers to gather donated books, sort them, and box them for transport. These recycled books are donated to underdeveloped countries around the world to help them create and maintain local libraries.
Help Needed:
Help sort and package books in the warehouse, or collect books, especially those in subjects such as health and medicine, social science, and applied science. Currently volunteer groups are limited to ten people. Please contact BFD for COVID-related updates.

Time Commitment
3 hours (9 AM to Noon on Saturdays); advance registration required, as space is limited.
Suitable for Groups of Volunteers?

Training Needed
None; BFD will provide instructions. “Wear old, seasonally adjusted, clothes, and expect good exercise.”

COLLECT NEEDED BOOKS
Books for Development has an ongoing need for used (and new) books about the following subjects:
health and medicine, sports, social science (sociology, marriage and family, statistics, politics, law, economic, public administration, and social welfare), and applied science (technical drawing, engineering, electrical, electronics, construction, carpentry, and architecture).
Books may be dropped off at the warehouse (3709 Polk St.) on Saturday mornings between 9 AM and noon.

SORT AND PACKAGE DONATED BOOKS
Sorting involves opening boxes of books, dividing them according to subjects and condition, and then boxing them up for shipment.

Examples of past Scout projects
Eagle: Miles S. collected book donations, raised funds for shipping, and traveled to Belize with 10 other volunteers. They established nine libraries for communities in need – three in Punta Gorda and six in Burrell Boom. (2019)
