What Is It?
A nonprofit dedicated to bringing birthday parties to children in homeless shelters, group homes, & other disadvantaged situations in Harris and Galveston counties.
Help host birthday parties in Houston, LaPorte, Liverpool, and Texas City; collect gifts or other party supplies; assemble goody bags, make decorations.
Minimum Age to Volunteer
14 independently; younger children may volunteer with a parent. Parents must sign a waiver for volunteers under 18.
Parties take place monthly, on Sunday afternoons, during the last two weeks of the month. Dates are set 30 days in advance. Volunteers serve for 3 hours: they arrive at 1 PM, the party begins at 2 PM, and they are finished by 4 PM.
Suitable for Groups of Volunteers?
Instructions are provided. Background checks are conducted on adult volunteers.
COLLECT TOYS OR PARTY SUPPLIES
Hold a toy drive at your school or community group for birthday gifts, or collect other party supplies. Note: TBJP only accepts new, unopened toys.
MAKE GOODY BAGS
Assemble enough goody bags for one party, or more. Bags usually contain 4-5 pieces of candy as well as 2-3 items such as silicone bracelets, bubbles, tattoos, noise makers, slinkies, slime, mini playdoh cups, and/or other toys. Parties are usually large; please contact TBJP for quantities.
Make colorful paper flowers, birthday banners, or other decorations to brighten the party spaces.
THE BIRTHDAY JOY PROGRAM
Parties are usually held at three shelters: in Liverpool (outside of Alvin), La Porte, and Houston (off of 59 at the Parker Rd Exit), and twice a year at the ACE after-school program in Texas City.
Examples of past Scout projects
Assembled 130 goody bags for future parties. TBJP would welcome projects such as making jumbo party games (a big Kerplunk game, yard Yahtzee, and/or other large games).
