What Is It?
A nonprofit “dedicated to restoring dignity and hope to abused and neglected children involved in Harris County Child Protective Services. BEAR provides basic necessities to the children in care, and support to the caseworkers of CPS.”
Help provide and/or organize donations of basic supplies, holiday gifts, or school supplies, or help with celebrations for youth who are graduating from CPS care.
Minimum Age to Volunteer
Suitable for Groups of Volunteers?
This program provides holiday gifts to children under the care of CPS who otherwise would have no holiday cheer at all. Donors are able to sponsor a child, make a donation, and/or volunteer at the BEARing Gifts warehouse in the Heights. Volunteers sort, select, and wrap gift donations.
BEAR GRADUATION CELEBRATION
Once the youth in CPS care age out of the system most of them have little to no support and have to face adulthood alone. BEAR helps youth get started on their journey as they transition into adulthood. This program needs volunteers during early summer each year to help with the celebration or to help provide necessities for graduating students.
BEAR BACK TO SCHOOL
BEAR provides more than 5,000 children with new uniforms, school supplies and a backpack to help them start school. Volunteers are needed each summer to help with school supply and uniform inventory and packing backpacks.
This program operates eight BEAR rooms throughout Harris County that provide emergency supplies for children who are in CPS care. These children often have nothing but the clothes they were wearing when the case worker arrived. BEAR seeks donations of critical items such as formula, diapers, new clothing, and hygiene supplies. More information is on the BEAR website.

during the holidays it’s so fun to help wrap and sort through all of the gifts. the kids lovee all of the rooms filled with toys!!
I volunteered here with my school and really enjoyed the time I spent here. It is so fun to look at the sheet you were given and go hunt through the tables and tables of toys to get the kids the toys they asked for.
