BEST BUDDIES TEXAS

What Is It?

A nonprofit “dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for friendships, employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

Help Needed:

Assist with the Friendship Walk & 5K fundraiser in April, or help with event planning in the office.  The 2021 Friendship Walk date was April 17.

Minimum Age to Volunteer

14 to help at the Friendship Walk, and 16 to help in the office.

EAST SPRING BRANCH FOOD PANTRY

What Is It?

A volunteer-run organization that provides food free of cost to people who need assistance and live in zip codes 77043, 77055, 77080, and 77024.

Help Needed:

Sort food, stock shelves, unload deliveries, help give out holiday bags, collect food to donate, and other tasks. Please contact the Food Pantry for COVID-related updates.

Minimum Age to Volunteer

12 (middle school).  Middle school students are welcome to sort food.  High school students may assist guests once they have had experience volunteering in other areas of the pantry.

HOUSTON PETS ALIVE!

What Is It?

A no-kill rescue organization that creates programs to save animals most at risk of euthanasia.  Its goal is to “prevent animals from entering a shelter, and for those that do, get them out alive.”

Help Needed:

Help care for adoptable cats at various local PetSmart stores, help with adoption events, collect needed items.  Please contact Pets Alive for COVID-related updates.

Minimum Age to Volunteer

14.  Volunteers ages 14-17 must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian and may not volunteer in the dog area for liability reasons.

MEMORIAL ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES (MAM)

What Is It?

A nonprofit that “helps people bounce back from a crisis and care for their families.”  Volunteer and paid caseworkers help MAM clients address their immediate needs with an array of emergency services, then help find long-term solutions to underlying issues that will continue to threaten families’ long-term stability.

Help Needed:

Assist customers, sort and price donations, and help in other ways at MAM’s popular resale store.  Please contact MAM for COVID-related updates. 

Minimum Age to Volunteer

13; youth aged 13-15 must be accompanied by an adult while volunteering.  Students under the age of 18 need written parental permission to volunteer.

PROJECT C.U.R.E.

What Is It?

The largest provider of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries around the world. Since its inception, it has delivered medical relief to needy people in over 130 countries.

Help Needed:

Sort and pack medical supplies, help in the warehouse, or donate Kits for Kids. Please contact Project C.U.R.E. for COVID-related updates.

15, to help at the warehouse. All ages may help with Kits for Kids.

TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER

What Is It?

An urban wildlife emergency and rehabilitative care facility that cares for injured, orphaned, or ill wild animals brought in by the public.  TWRC also conducts outreach programs for youths and adult groups to promote living in harmony with nature.

Help Needed:

Assist with education programs, caring for animals, and maintaining the animal care center. Volunteers also feed baby birds, squirrels, and opossums and collect needed items.  Please contact TWRC for COVID-related updates.

Minimum Age to Volunteer

14. Volunteers must be at least 12 (with a guardian) for baby bird and baby squirrel programs.

VITA LIVING, INC.

What Is It?

A non-profit that provides lifelong support programs for adults and children with disabilities like cerebral palsy and autism, “to help them live meaningful, independent lives in the communities we share.” Current programs include 18 group homes, respite care, nursing, and transportation.

Help Needed:

Volunteers are invited to lead activities with clients, such as making cards, doing crafts, and playing sports, or work on home improvement projects such as painting, gardening, and organizing.  Please contact Vita Living for COVID-related updates.

What Is It?

A nonprofit that provides housing and supportive services to women and families who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness. Programs include a long-term residential treatment program in Montrose and affordable housing complexes and a service center in Spring Branch.
