AISHEL HOUSE

What Is It?

A charity that offers “the comforts of home and community” — including meals, accommodations, Jewish chaplaincy, child care, and transportation — to patients who come to the Texas Medical Center from around the world.

Help Needed:

Deliver meals, create holiday food or crafts for patients, help care for children of patients or family members, sing holiday songs for patient families, and perform other helpful tasks.  Please contact Aishel House for COVID-related updates.

THE BALLARD HOUSE

What Is It?

A nonprofit that provides “temporary housing in our community with a warm, safe environment for individuals and their families who are hospitalized or receiving treatment for a serious medical condition.”

Help Needed:

Projects could include bringing a meal to share, collecting supplies, helping with landscaping, or helping with decorating or organizing.

THE BEACON

What Is It?

A nonprofit that provides services — meals, showers, laundry service, case management, medical and psychiatric care, pro bono legal services, and pastoral care — that “help restore dignity, self-respect, and hope to Houston’s poor and homeless.”

Help Needed:

BO’S PLACE

What Is It?

A “bereavement center offering grief support services to children, ages 3 to 18, and their families who have experienced the death of a child or an adult in their immediate family, as well as programs for grieving adults.”

Help Needed:

THE BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS

What Is It?

A comprehensive crisis intervention and prevention center whose services include a 100-bed emergency shelter, transitional housing for women, permanent housing for adults with disabilities and children in their care, and many other programs.

Help Needed:

Projects include collecting needed supplies, organizing the shelter food pantry, arranging activities for children, helping with mailings, and working on annual charity races and other events.

THE CENTER FOR PURSUIT

What Is It?

A nonprofit organization that provides “residential, vocational, and day services that promote individual choice, personal growth, and independence for persons with developmental disabilities.”

Help Needed:

Assist with campus beautification projects, engage with clients, collect needed items, and/or package gingersnaps and other baked goods for sale.  Please contact the Center for COVID-related updates.

EMERGENCY AID COALITION

What Is It?

An interfaith organization that collaborates to provide temporary assistance in the form of food, clothing, and other basic needs, with an emphasis on serving the working poor.

Help Needed:

Organize, pack, and serve food at the food pantry; help at the clothing center; distribute school supplies; and many more options. Please contact the EAC for COVID-related updates.

FISHER HOUSE – MICHAEL E. DeBAKEY VA MEDICAL CENTER

What Is It?

The Houston Fisher House provides a “home away from home” for families and patients receiving medical care within MEDVAMC.  It is available free of charge to families of Veterans being treated for long-term illnesses.

Help Needed:

Provide meals or snacks, decorate for various holidays and bring holiday treats, collect needed items, help enhance the landscaping, and other projects.  Please check with Fisher House for COVID-related updates.

KIDS’ MEALS

What Is It?

A nonprofit that works to “end childhood hunger” by delivering free, fresh, healthy meals, year-round Monday through Friday, to the doorsteps of hungry preschool-aged children who live within the charity’s delivery areas.

Help Needed:

Volunteers can help prepare meals, collect needed items, decorate lunch bags, and help with special events.  Please contact Kids’ Meals for COVID-related updates.

LDS PEANUT BUTTER CANNERY

What Is It?

Through its partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Houston Food Bank receives more than 400,000 jars of fresh peanut butter each year from the LDS Peanut Butter Cannery. The Food Bank is responsible for supplying volunteers and paying for the peanuts used.

Help Needed:

Volunteers help produce 3,960 jars of peanut butter in each 4-hour shift. Tasks include sorting the nuts, checking lids on jars, operating the label machine, and packing jars in boxes.  Please contact the Cannery for COVID-related updates.

LOAVES & FISHES SOUP KITCHEN

What Is It?

A program run by Magnificat Houses, a Christian assistance ministry, that serves 200-400 nutritious, home-cooked lunches per day, six days a week (Tuesday-Sunday), to downtown Houston’s needy.

Help Needed:

Assist Loaves & Fishes’ cooks as they prepare the food, help serve the meal, chat with diners, and help clean up.  Contact Loaves & Fishes for COVID-related updates.

NORA’S HOME

What Is It?

An affordable home away from home for transplant patients and their families who travel to the Texas Medical Center for their surgery.  The facility offers “a warm, loving, and home-like environment so guests can focus on what is truly important – getting well.”

Help Needed:

Meal preparation, gardening, playing games and doing art activities with guests, collecting kitchen supplies or other needed items, help maintain website. Please contact Nora’s Home for COVID-related updates.

What Is It?

A nonprofit organization focused on “community service, social development, and unity within our community.” It promotes the practice and obligation of Zakat (charity), one of the five Pillars of Islam, and welcomes volunteers of all faiths.

Help Needed:

What Is It?

A nonprofit organization that offers a home away from home providing care, compassion, and hope to families with seriously ill children being treated in Texas Medical Center member institutions.

What Is It?

A “Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men and women and their children. Positive life changes are encouraged through structured programs which focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life management and recovery from substance abuse.”

Help Needed:
