CHRISTMAS BOXES OF BLESSING – CHRIST THE KING PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH | Min. Age: 3

What Is It?: A program that “engages families experiencing food insecurity when their children are on Christmas break without school-provided meals.” It fills thousands of Boxes of Blessing with enough food to feed a family for about a week during the holiday. Partner schools and ministries distribute the boxes to families that they work with all year.

 

Help Needed: High school & college age volunteers assemble the cardboard boxes during one evening in November, and 600 volunteers of all ages fill the boxes in December.

COLLEGE MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY ASSOCIATION | Min. Age: 0

What Is It?: An historic five-acre cemetery that was founded in 1896 and served as the burial site for Houston’s freed slaves who lived in the historic Fourth Ward. The cemetery was neglected for many years.

 

Help Needed: Restoration began in 2007 and is ongoing. Volunteers are needed to help with work such as mowing, trimming weeds, and cleaning up litter.
